Do you know how much insulation is in your attic? Many homes that were built before the 1985 have very little insulation or none at all. It is important to have a proper amount of insulation in your attic because the attic is a cold zone and your insulation is what separates you from it. Current standards require R-50 for attic insulation. This is about 16"-18" of fiberglass batt or loose fill insulation. Many older homes have R-8 or less.
Check your attic and see how much insulation is up there. You could be losing heat and wasting both money and energy. Your home could qualify for government grants as part of the ecoENERGY retrofit program. You could get $1500 in grant money to upgrade your insulation.
There are also lots of other grants you can get for improving the efficiency of your home.

Low Flush Toilets

By replacing your old toilet with a low flush toilet you can drastically reduce your water consumption. Toilets that use 6 L or less per flush and Dual flush toilets can qualify for $130 in grant money from the government. You will also save on your water consumption and reduce your water bill. A toilet uses the most amount of water in most homes. It is important to conserve water and energy. We take for granted the abundance of clean water we have, and should stop wasting before we run out
